Paul Sloane, Des MacHale"Outstanding Lateral Thinking Puzzles"(Sterling)

Mark Twain was stopped by Customs and asked what he had in his suitcase. He replied, "Just clothes." However, when the official searched his suitcase, he found a large bottle of whisky on which Twain would have to pay duty. What explanation did Twain give that caused the official to smile and let him through without payment?

(p38)
Twain said, "I used it as a nightcap!" (p84)

A plane flying at 25,000 feet(7,500 meters) suddenly switches off all its engines but is in no danger. Why?

(p39)

The plane had just been picked up by another plane, a giant aircraft carrier, and so its engines could be safely switched off.
